"...The portrait of Mardel and I was indeed fashioned from two separate photographs. The foreground was of Mardel and I in my home, and the second was an advertisement photo portraying a Hilton suite several stories above the Chicago cityscape. We put it into a beautiful frame which she displays in her dormitory. I feel compelled to give you a brief telling of our story...
Perhaps this will be the real "frame" for the portrait. Mardel and I have known each other for 4 years and will have been dating for 4 years this December 18th. This email comes providentially as today is her birthday, the day that I presented her with her portrait exactly one year previous. We attend school at separate universities separated by state lines, she at the University of Arkansas and me at the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma. Our relationship has grown from high school prom to a full year apart due to an academy I attended to my gathering the courage to ask her mother (a very intimidating woman with a black belt in Tae kwon do and prowess with a fencing foil) for her permission that I court Mardel to this day, her twenty-second birthday. Throughout our relationship, we have dealt with things common to involved couples; we have battled doubt and loneliness and have succeeded in remaining true to one another.
Ours is a grand story of grace and love between two flawed people who love each other dearly. As you look into the painting, into the beautiful rendering of her smiling face, look for the trust in her eyes. Look for the confidence and delight in my smile. See how two people can love each other purely despite our imperfection. Envision, if you will, the moment after the one captured by the portrait and you will glimpse the gift I give her tonight, one year after the portrait was presented to her. My eyes glow and my lips draw together. Her radiant smile dims to a look of expectation. I draw her up into my arms and give my first kiss to the first and only woman I have ever loved!
With Sincere Gratitude,
Jason..." |
